My 1st gen rx7's usually got around 20-25mpg during normal town driving, so it's safe to say it isn't that good. As for reliability, the rotary is such a simple engine that you need not do much more than change the oil religiously to keep it running smoothly. Most engine deaths are caused by overheating - rotary engines already run much hotter than a conventional piston engine. Pop a heater hose, lose your fluid, and you could have a dead engine in a matter of minutes. It's not uncommon for a semi-clogged catalytic converter to glow bright red when it's hooked up to a rotary. Rotaries also burn a small amount of oil during operation, by design. You have to top up the oil about every 1000 miles or you'll be running low by the time your oil change comes around. I can't think of anything better than a Delorean with a turbo'd rotary in it. Nothing like going 80 in third gear, without being at redline. Since everything is turning in one direction, your RPM limit is really constrained by your belt driven parts, such as alternator and water pump. In the racing world, rotaries are driven continuously at 10-15,000 rpm! The lighter weight of the engines (only about 250lbs with all the accessories off) would probably help even the Delorean's weight distribution out a bit.

Hello,
My DeLorean has had the same battery in it since the day it was bought in
81. It will no longer hold a charge. What battery do you reccomend? I want
a high quality battery that will last me a while. What are the part numbers
for the battery? I searched the archives but didnt find any part numbers.
David, Thanks #2496-needs help

My wife is getting tired of waiting in line at the post office, so we're winding down the store. See what's left at http://www.dmcnews.com/Merchandise/supporttemp.html
We still have Christmas cards, posters, and radio manuals. I'm going to stop selling cards as of 12/1, since you probably wouldn't get them in time for use anyway after that. I'll try again next fall. After 12/1, we'll still take orders for posters and radio manuals. In the past I've been shipping right after receipt of check, now we'll probably only ship on Saturday after receipt.
Thanks for all your support, we picked up enough to cover the expenses of the DMCNews List (web server and eGroups' no-ad fee), for quite some time, and covered the cost of the TShirts, and the loss on the printing of the directory. Thanks to James for donating much of the merchandise that we sold.
Some interesting stats - we sold stuff to 38 people (plus the nine who haven't yet gotten around to sending in money - you know who you are). I learned quite a bit about shipping costs - orders went all over the US, and as far away as Scotland, Norway, and Australia. There are less than 50 of those shirts in circulation (and a bunch of those are in, or at least on their way to, Norway - thanks Stian!!), so if you ever see anyone wearing one it's pretty unique.
I'm considering a new t-shirt to sell at Cleveland2000, we may dream up some sort of contest for that. Stay tuned. To anyone who bought the original one, it is now a collectors item since I'm not making any more of that design.

I'm a brand spankin' new Delorean owner (#844). I was going to try to replace the battery in my flashlight key, and when I opened it up parts flew everywhere. I've got the copper peice with the bulb, and the spring but I have a feeling I'm missing something else. If some one could describe the inner workings of this key, or better yet take a couple pictures of the inside of their own, I'd be very grateful. Thanks.

I don't know for sure, but I've had a similar occurance on my '87 Ford Escord IV: there was insufficient ground to the headlights, which caused the lowbeams to "draw ground" through the highs. Effectively switching them in series... This also happened when switching over to highbeams; then the lows came on a little bit. If you problem IS ground-related, this could also explain why your taillights don't illuminate.
Hope this helps,

When you install a new rubberpad on the pedals (clutch) - Are you supposed to just "hang it on" to the pedal or is it better to glue it on the pedal? If so, what is the recommended glue? Please advise.

ok, I decided to give Delorean One a chance, all I wanted was to order one of their catalogs. I've heard about them being jerks in the past to just about everybody, but I wanted to find out for my self. I called up and asked to order their catalog, they asked my name, i said "Erik Geerdink". He QUICKLY said, "We've heard of you and know that you are all over the internet and you order parts from other supplies (Houston, Grady). We don't have anything here that would benifit you." I still asked for the catalog because I wanted to look at the cool accesories and parts...at pictures. He stated "I'm not going to send you a catalog."
Whats up with these people?? Do they only select the "elite" delorean people, or do they just not want buisness??
Sorry for bringing the Delorean One subject up again.

I caught a glimpse of a DeLorean in the movie "Beverly Hills Cop" this morning. Mid-way through the movie, you see it when Eddie Murphy is waiting for the bad guy at his home. When the black Mercedes pulls out of the driveway, you see the front of the DeLorean parked across the street.
Just another sighting for the list. Beverly Hills Cop is on HBO all the month.

Hello Dupont!
Yes there are some thing you can do to save on money.
First the easy part, Don't toss the seats, the can be recovered and with just a bit of effort you can do this your self. I would suggest posting to the LWL looking for a set of used seat covers an owner may be ready to toss. Most seats wear out on the sides and suffer from split seams, both are easily fixed using a needle and thread. Recovering is really very easy and only requires a pair of hog nose pliers and hog rings or you can use waxed carpet thread and a curved needle (which is what I used when I did my seats. My seats look factory new and can not be distinguished from the original installation.
Now the Carpets, I take it you mean the entire floor carpets and not the LOGO mats. If this is the case the solution is even easier. Go out and find a color match for your existing carpets and get a few yards. Pull the seats and center consol. Pull up the current carpet and use it as a pattern to cut the new carpet. You will have to remove some door flashing but this is no big deal. My guess is that you should be able to find a remnant for less than $50. My wife is always replacing the carpet in my work room when I spill some sort of nasty plastic goop on it. That room is 12'X14' and I doubt she has ever spent more than $25.
another thought:
Depending on the actual condition of the seats (including sun damage and ripped panels) it may possible to clean up and use the existing seats. If you like contact me privately at:
<color><param>0000,0000,ffff</param>lseiler(AT)radiance.com
</color>and I will help you reclaim the seats, is messy but a lot of fun. Like washing the Dog!
Lee
BTW:
Once upon a time I painted cars as a second job and can tell you that DuPont made a line of auto paint that would stick to any correctly prepared metal surface. It was called "Imron, or Imeron" (spl?) If you want to repair the damage and repaint, I suggest the same paint which is still available, but do at least 3 coats on the whole DMC. Don't attempt to just do the effected panels, it won't work no matter how well kept the paints color changes the moment it starts curing. This is also something you can do your self for the cost of the paint and rent of the painting gear. It's a lot of work but requires only average hand and eye skills. Less fun than washing a dog but more rewarding.
