Subject: ADMIN:Poll result/DMC2 (long)

Interesting times in DMC-Land. Over the weekend I posted a query to the list
about the continued discussion on the DMC2/Watch thing. All there is to go
on (or was at that moment - keep reading) was the new web site to look at.
Nothing in the mainstream press. And not really very much on the web site.
The decisive (25 to 3 at various temperatures) response was that we should
temper the "what-if-maybe" discussion until something with some substance
comes along.

Then the story gets more amusing, at least to me. Although some people
weren't amused at the time. . . . . .

Almost simultaneously, a post came in from something called the [DMC2]
eGroup list to check out the updated "watch" web site, and announcing that
the long-dormant "newdelorean/DMC2" eGroup was being opened up for
discussion as an UNmoderated group (note the term unmoderated - oops).

It was being operated by an un-named person going as dmc2[at]delorean.com. .
. We really do not know who he/she is. Many of you may recall that the
newdelorean list was formed over a year ago by polling members of this group
and inviting them to join. The list admin was then turned over to business
associates of JZD, but we're not sure who by name. We, nor James, have any
relationship to the current group.

There was no one on that list that did not agree to be there, albeit a long
time ago (August 1999 to be exact). The subscriber list of this
newly-reactivated list therefore contained over 1000 old email addresses. My
guess is that about a third of them forget that they ever signed up, and
another third had long ago quit the DML. If you are (un)fortunate enough to
have been on that list, you watched the comedy of errors over the weekend as
people attempted to unsubscribe by posting to the list, adding up to, by the
end of the weekend, about 200 emails from the [DMC2] list. About 195 of
these were "remove me" (and stronger words) messages. Although a few did,
I'm just thankful that more people didn't confuse the two lists and quit the
wrong one!

By the end of the weekend, the list owner shut down the list (no doubt
anticipating even more hate mail come Monday morning as everyone returned to
work - I'd guess that at least half the members of this or any email list do
not monitor email over the weekend). In addition, dmc2[at]delorean.com
closed his email account and is still unidentified. (We know this because
the delorean.com domain, including email, is owned by DMC Houston and they
checked. See the posting by James Espey a few days ago about this email
domain - anyone can sign up anonymously for email thru this service, just
like Yahoo or Hotmail).

So far that's about all there is to know, again until something of substance
comes along let's keep the list to the facts - and the cars. . So - Short
answer - we'll limit postings on this topic to new information. If you don't
like this, feel free to start another list.

Dave - getting better at this "Iron Hand" thing. . . . .

Darryl,

You have my curiosity up now. I'm pretty sure I read it somewhere on the
list, so when I get the whole list downloaded on my computer then I will be
able to search it easier.

Anyway, I was working under my car today and while I was there I looked over
the steering rack. There is a point where the pinion mounts, and then there
is an alternate place where the pinion could attach which is covered by a
cover plate. If one swapped the locations of the pinion and the cover
plate, rotated the rack assembly about 90 degrees, then it appears it would
still fit the car and probably work. Could this be what I read about? Are
you sure this can't be done? Not that anyone would do this on purpose. Is
this cover plate the place the pinion is supposed to attach when using it on
a RHD car? Or is it there for some other purpose?

Let me clarify. I assumed you had good fluid or had changed it recently. If
so this problem would probably indicate the master cylinder is failing. Call
Rob Grady or your parts supplier. I am sure they will tell you it is not
uncommon to discover a 20 year old master cylinder MAY be going bad.
Especially if you recently changed the fluid. This could show a bad seal
which may have been hidden previously by bad or gummed up brake fluid.

hour stopping and going, on the brakes off the brakes etc. the brake peddle
was starting to get "squishy"...it would almost touch the floor. Before the
trip I had a good firm peddle. After waiting for just a couple of minutes
the firm peddle would come back, but after some more stop and go it would

  Thoughts?

I've received several e-mails regarding the caravan to the VA show. I need an e-mail confiming your interest in caravaning by thursday so I can set up a time and place to meet you. I'm not sure if I'll be taking Rt 295 or Rt 95 through to DE. It depends on how many people can confirm a meeting. You tell me what exit you want to meet at and on what highway. I want to just meet on the shoulder of the highway at an underpass. That seems like the easiest way to do things. I have people meeting in NJ, PA, DE, and MD so far. So, if you plan on going to the show and would like to join the caravan, please e-mail me asap at Danrc30(at)hotmail.com. I'm leaving NJ at around 2PM. Should cross over into MD at around 4PM. That's just a guide for you all. Hope to see you there.

Joshua,

The symptoms you are describing is what is known as clutch "chatter", this sound indicates any of the following:
Disc face oil or grease soaked.
Disc, pressure plate, and or flywheel face burned, scored, and or warped.

Although there are other causes of your symptoms the most common in the DeLorean is above.

A leaking rear seal will cause oil to leak into the bell housing and deposited onto the clutch component surfaces named above. If your DeLorean has more than 60k miles on the clutch you should have it replaced. Be sure to have the flywheel inspected and re surfaced if necessary and replace the rear crankshaft lip seal.

  List,
When I first start my car and let off the clutch in first gear, I get a
rumble from the transmission/cluctch area. Could this be related to the throw
out bearing? It seems as if the gear and clutch "don't catch, then catch"
repeatedly. It lessens as I get going. When fully warmed up, it smoothes
out...Or, do I have a more serious problem, like the transmission?

  Dear Group,
Just wanted to throw my 2 pennies in before the thread is killed.
If you use any form of fix-a-flat, PLEASE tell the tire place that it
is in there. As I work in a tire repair/ service station, I can tell
you first hand that fix a flat is extremely dangrous. It is very
irratating to the mechanics (and anyone else within 20 feet) eyes,
nose, mouth, and skin. Not so much a problem anymore as most shops
ban smoking in the work area, but fix-a- flat is very flamable. Also
if you run over a nail or something, plan on buying a new tire
because most shops will not fix tires with this stuff in them because
the patches will not stick (sometimes they will for a day or two but
99.9% of the time they will not stick at all).

  Dear Group,
  I got a strange 1 for y'all. I have a friend who owns VIN# 2400. He
is the original owner and the car has less than 60,000 miles. It is
definitly an 81. The strange part is this car was first purchased in
late 1984 or early 1985 (YES you DID read this right). Unfortunately,
this car is, as Tamir would call it, a sad car. It has been sitting,
abandoned, under my friends carport for the last 5 to 10 years,
collecting bird ka ka and housing hornets. Yes, I am harassing the
heck out of my friend to let me restore it for him, free labor even
but he says no. OOOOHHHH Welll. Maybe he'll give in and we'll see the
car in Graceland.
  Later,

I would run a power line to the fuse panel (under the carpet) &
plug it into a connection which is only powered when the
ignition is on. You can also go to AutoZone (or the like) and
get a device which has an extra connection in it to hook it up.
You definately want to be sure that the power line has has an
"in-line" fuse to protect everything. For ground you can run a
line up to the compartment which is benind the driver's seat
under the storage shelf. The metal casing which is in there is
a ground source.

If you have any other questions, let me know.

Any year

I don't need it fast just looking for a good daily driver here soon.

A while back I had my seats re-upholstered in cloth w/factory
stitching. The seats are alot more comfortable now, but I have a
slight problem with the drivers side. If you push your back into the
seat hard enough, the top portion of the panel on the back pops out.
Passenger seat is fine. Any ideas?

The DeLorean Club of Ohio had a get-together last Saturday in the Cuyahoga
National Recreation Area. You probably saw one of our members on their way to
or from the event. I think John & Penny Steifel said they were going to visit
Amish country, so it was probably theirs. They are not on the DML, but I will
pass your compliment on to them.

Next month we will have a fall tour in central Ohio, featuring a technical
presentation by Dave Bauerle, in case you are interested.

Subject: Ducy to Motorola swap in an '82

My '82 is supposed to have the Motorola alternator, of course, but somehow
has the Ducellier that's only supposed to be in the '81's. (Yes, I'm
positive!) When I first got the D and changed the belts, the mechanic told
me the alternator belt size supplied by my DeLorean vendor in the minor tune
up kit was the "wrong" size. I'm guessing that's because it's the wrong
alternator, which I didn't realize when I bought the tune up kit. My voltage
readings are usually low. 12 at best, frequently lower... 10 or less,
especially with the a/c on.
Tomorrow morning I'm having a used Motorola installed. It came with the
bracket arm attached. And I still have that correct "wrong" belt. Any other
mods involved here? Do they use the same electrical connector plug, I hope?
If not, HELP, what do I need to get? I'd really like it installed before I
drive 5 hours to Richmond, VA. half afraid to use the a/c.

Subject: Hazard Lights

Now, we all know that I am not a DeLorean expert, and this question might
seem stupid. I was in my DeLorean, checking everything, and I noticed that my
hazard lights toggle/button does not "stick," so it can't stay on. I thought
that something must be wrong because many other cars have it so when you push
it, it stays on. But then again, the DeLorean is not like other cars.

Thanks for your help,

Hi DMLers,

Can the person who asked me about a DMC article in a Thailand Car magazine a
year or so ago please refresh my memory. Do you have any reference to this
publication. I will be working in Bangkok next week and can do some research
to see if a copy can be found.

Cheers, IAN (vin.#s 00780, 01205, 06425)

I indeed watched that comedy of errors over the weekend. It was pretty funny.
Nobody listened to anything that anybody said, because they were all too busy
trying to post "remove me." THANK GOD this is a moderated group.

Yes,I got the same stuff, but I did not trust those emails,I just
happened to delete them just before I came to the DMCnews egroups,How
can you tell if my computer had/has been infected,I am running
windows 98 on a laptop,also I had something weird happen before I
deleted them, all my new email changed from the sender to the
reciever,Ex:instead of the header saying DMCnews egroups it said that
it came from my email to DMCnews egroups, all my new email was like
that,so I deleted everything. And came here to read the DML,and found
this virus alert.aLSO IF ANYBODY RECIEVES ANY EMAIL FROM ME
(CBL302_at_dml_MSN.COM)WITH A ATTACHMENT PLEASE DELETE IT,AS I AM AFRAID IT
MIGHT HAVE JUST TURNED AROUND AND USED MY EMAIL TO SEND ATTACHMENTS
TO OTHER USERS.THAT MIGHT BE WHY MY HEADERS WERE REVERSED.

THANKS
